In the first anime he shows more "humanity"
Around the second Anime he is as detached as motoko was in the first; even ol ape-face mentions it!

Anyway, I think it's because Batou's a deliberate foil character to her-- despite being just as intelligent he tends to be a lot more grounded. And he likes blowing things up, which is always a plus.
One tiny thing about this picture that sorta bugs me: He's much smaller than he is in the show. You could level him up a bit by widening his shoulders. Yes, I believe that would do him the exact sort of justice he deserves: BADASS JUSTICE!
